Governors’ Camp

Governors’ Camp was once exclusively reserved for Kenya’s colonial rulers. Today, it remains one of the Masai Mara’s best safari camps.

Tucked in a shady grove along the winding Mara River, Governors’ Camp has 37 large, bright riverside guest tents enjoying interrupted views of the waterway or of the Masai Mara’s famous golden plains.

Everything is under canvas, from the bathrooms found in each suite to the open-sided bar and dining room. In good weather, dine beneath the trees or out in the bush. Game drives take place on the Masai Mara’s grasslands in custom-built 4WD vehicles, in search of the reserve’s celebrated wildlife. One and a half million wildebeest and tens of thousands of zebra and gazelle pass through the area surrounding Governors’ Camp from July through to October.

Other things to do at this magical camp include hot air ballooning – a truly unforgettable way to see sunrise over the savanna. Also available are Maasai cultural visits for insight into a way of life unchanged for centuries. Guests can also take an overnight trip to Mfangano Island in Lake Victoria – approximately 40 minutes’ flight away.
