An unassuming grey-green building nestled amongst brawny native gums and tangled grapevines, Spicers Vineyards Estate is a truly romantic rural retreat in the heart of the Hunter Valley with its luxurious suites, award-winning restaurant, kitchen garden and expansive cellar.

This luxurious weekender is an excellent base to explore the many vineyards of this 190-year old wine region, or simply a very nice setting to eat well, rest and rejuvenate on your own or with a special someone.

The 12 guestrooms are exceedingly comfortable, with open fireplaces, baskets full of firewood, starched sheets and fluffy towels. Stone ensuite bathrooms come replete with jetted tubs, rain showers, heated towel rails and premium bath amenities. The 4-bedroom Vineyard’s House boasts a private pool and is ideal for small groups. Pad down to Spicers’ signature Spa Anise for a pampering facial or massage, or lay down with a good book by the sparkling outdoor pool. There are hanging wicker egg chairs to cosy up in, from where you can look for visiting pink-and-grey galahs or kangaroos.

For exercise, there are plenty of nature trails to wander on the property, a bountiful kitchen garden to explore and even a giant outdoor chessboard to play with beyond the hanging vines. While wine tours are a must here, there are plenty of other highly recommended activities in the region including golf, mountain biking and hot air ballooning.

Of course, no stay is complete without a meal at the wonderful Restaurant Botanica headed by Cameron Matthews previously Head Chef at Spicers Clovelly Estate’s Long Apron Restaurant. Many of the herbs and vegetables in his dishes are home-grown, lending supremely fresh flavour to already delicious fare. Of course, every course can be matched with wines, and if you’re still thirsty, visit the many discreet cellar doors along Hermitage Road.
