In August 2024, my sister and I set off on a long-awaited adventure curated by African Wildlife Safaris. Our journey began with a flight from Sydney to Johannesburg.

Day 1 – Johannesburg

After arriving, we enjoyed a courtesy transfer to the nearby Peermont D’oreale Grande within the Emperors Palace Hotel. We found this luxurious 5-star hotel the perfect place to relax after our long flight, with a casino, numerous restaurants, and live entertainment conveniently located on-site. Everything we needed was at our doorstep, and we felt ready for the adventures ahead.

Day 2 – Sabi Sabi

Having the night in Johannesburg allowed us to have a relaxed morning breakfast at the hotel restaurant before our late-morning flight to Skukuza, located in Kruger National Park. On arrival, we were warmly welcomed by our guide and transferred to Little Bush Camp in the Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve. During the drive, we were thrilled to spot a giraffe and an ostrich, our first wildlife sightings! The camp manager Lawrence and his team greeted us with refreshing drinks and hot towels and really made us feel welcomed. Our luxurious suite featured contemporary African design, and really took our breathe away with the privacy and seclusion it offered, with a private viewing deck and spa bath. It really made it feel like we were the only ones there! That afternoon we headed out on our first safari where we spotted a female lion and her cub along with rhinos and hyenas – an unforgettable day!

Day 3 – Sabi Sabi

This morning was our first real test, with a nice early 5:30am wake-up call, for a 6am start. It wasn’t all that bad, because we were both so excited to get out and explore at sunrise and see what we would find. Our guide and ranger were incredible, both determined to help us spot all the animals on our wish list, including a herd of elephants. Their dedication paid off, and we were ecstatic to officially tick off the Big 5 on our second day of safari. After a delicious breakfast back at Little Bush Camp, we transferred to another property on the reserve, the stunning Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge. Manager Alta welcomed us and provided a personal tour, showcasing the lodge’s unique design and uninterrupted bushveld views. Our suite at Earth Lodge was very different to Little Bush, even more lavish in its interior, extremely spacious and a beautiful outdoor sitting area with a private pool. During our stay we even spotted an inquisitive warthog!

Day 4 – Cape Town

We reluctantly said goodbye to Sabi Sabi this morning, eager for our next adventure. An early flight brought us to Cape Town, where a private driver met us and transferred us to The Commodore, situated near the vibrant Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Our room was elegantly furnished, offering breathtaking views of Table Mountain. The blend of urban charm and natural beauty was the perfect backdrop for the next part of our journey, and we enjoyed strolling along the waterfront, soaking in the atmosphere, and planning for the days ahead.

Day 5 – Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

Our adventure continued with a half-day city tour of Cape Town, led by an insightful local guide. We explored Bo-Kaap, Signal Hill, the Castle of Good Hope, Green Market Square, and the Company Gardens. Our guide’s deep knowledge brought the history of Cape Town to life. At midday we were transferred to Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, a few hours out of Cape Town along the scenic Garden Route. We were welcomed by the staff and given a personal tour of the property, which overlooks Walker Bay. We were able to relax a little this afternoon, before a beautiful dining experience positioned next to a flaming stove.

Day 6 – Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

On our second day at Grootbos we were spoilt for choice with their selection of activities. We participated in the Marine Big 5 boat trip where we spotted Southern Right whales, Cape fur seals and sharks. Later in the morning we experienced our first-ever 4×4 flower safari, a horseback riding experience through the gardens, and ended a long and eventful day in the best possible way – with a relaxing spa massage. The day wasn’t over though, as we experienced another sensational dinner, sipping on tasteful local hand-picked wine. We realised that dining at Grootbos was an experience in itself! Overall, all excursions were amazing and truly complimented our time at Grootbos, allowing us to experience the natural wonders of the marine, coastal and inland ecosystems of the Cape.

Day 7 – Cape Town

On our final day, we made our way back to Cape Town, making a stop at Stoney Point to observe a colony of South African penguins. We spent time watching these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat, laughing at their playful interactions. It was the perfect end to our incredible journey. As we reflected on our experiences, from the thrilling game drives to the breathtaking landscapes and diverse wildlife, we felt grateful for the memories and adventures shared. Our journey with African Wildlife Safaris was truly a trip of a lifetime.
